HHow do you make bIII's and bVII's work in a major key?
I'm always looking for new musical tricks and I heard of adding flat thirds and flat seventh chords to major progressions can work well, but they just sound so off key when I try them.
when is it best to use them.?
and have you anything else I can learn musically?

The best way to use them is when you modulate. When you modulate or have a bridge, you can go one more flat key, by using PIVOT CHORDS. If you stay on the same key for the entire piece, whatever the flats or sharps you throw in would definitely sound off
